Many (millions?) of happy users have no "frustration" using Adobe Apps that are frequently upgraded for a meagre cost of subscribing. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog. Hold down Alt/Opt+Shift while restarting Lightroom. Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences. You "paid for" a licence to use their software (for 8 years!), it does not mean you have the software forever. A Preference File will survive a Lightroom uninstall/reinstall. The instructions are for the in-product update, which as stated in the original post, only knows about CC downloads and updates. It shows that the latest version for Lightroom 5 is 5.7.1 but provides no means to get it.
LIGHTROOM 5 UPGRADES UPGRADE
I think you have had a fairly good run of v5 since it was released in 2013 (8 years?) Don't you think it is about time to reward Adobe for their intellectual property with an upgrade to Version-11 (by subscription). The referenced page in this post and in downstream replies no longer has any download links.

LIGHTROOM 5 UPGRADES UPDATE
The problem is when I go to Adobes website, there is no file there to download the update from. Adobe does not support v5 (Perpetual) in any way. Im still using Lightroom 5 because I dont see a point in upgrading and recently it has kept asking me to update to 5.7 from 5.6. This is the situation as we (other users like you- in this forum) know about v5.xx Buyer beware - Adobe is a user-hostile company and should be avoided at all costs. Lol, I hope others see this and save themselves the frustration of trying to get what they'd paid for.
P.S the support guy kept trying to make me go to these forums for answers. The December 2021 release of Lightroom desktop (version 5.1) and mobile (version 7.1) provides support for new cameras, lenses, and bug fixes. For a full list of supported cameras and lenses, and bug fixes see: Supported camera models Supported lenses Fixed issues In Lightroom for Android, Recommended Presets comes with enhanced search and menu options. I am now looking into Lightroom replacements, and I think I will need to wipe my Mac and reinstall it, just to be certain that all Adobe bloatware is gone, because *gasp* surprise, their "cleaner" tool found nothing to "clean" on my computer, despite the fact that there is dozens of little apps and agents running all the time.
Let me be very clear: I will never give Adobe a single cent, ever again. The support person simply kept repeating that I should upgrade and pay Adobe more money. I explained I was simply looking to obtain the latest version of my (admittedly quite old) product, and not actually need support. So did the actual download of Lightroom 5 with the update work without having to enter the serial number? I am starting to become very frustrated, as I have clients waiting on their wedding photos, and all I want is the update my original Lightroom 5 said it needed.Just had a similar and yet still unbelievable exchange with a "support" person, who basically said that my perpetual license has expired, and that they don't support older version any more.
However I can open Lightroom but it's now saying in Adobe Creative Cloud on my Mac, that I am in a trial of Lightroom, but when I open Lightroom it doesn't show any spot that says how many days are left in the trial. I searched and searched Adobe forums and found a new link for the full download of Lightroom 5 with the update, so I uninstalled my current Lightroom 5 and reinstalled the new one, only the new download never asked for the serial number, and says it cannot open because there is no "Adobe Application Manager", so I downloaded the new copy of Adobe Application Manager, and the window is still popping up. I called Adobe, (Yes, I know they no longer support Lightroom 5) they sent a link for an update to Lightroom 5, which was a dead end.
LIGHTROOM 5 UPGRADES SERIAL NUMBER
Once I installed the update it prompted me to enter my serial number, then it said serial number is invalid. I hit the update button in Lightroom, it took me to an Adobe page and from there I found the update, or what I thought was correct the update. In the last month it started crashing if I would let it sit for about 10mins without any activity, and it would not read a raw file on my new camera, so I figured it needed an update. I purchased Lightroom 5 four years ago, and it has been fantastic.
